Loon Zoom Presentations

Loon Zoom Presentations

The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation is providing monthly online “Loon Zoom” presentations about loon behavior, research, conservation, and ecology. Six presentations will be offered at 7pm on the second Thursday of the month from November to April. The presentations will include:

  • 11/9/23: Loons of the World: Renowned wildlife photographer, Dr. Wayne Lynch, will provide a fascinating overview of his experiences encountering all five species of loons in the Arctic.

  • 12/14/23: Conservation Through the Lives of Adirondack Loons: Nina Schoch will lead an intriguing discussion about loon ecology and conservation. She will cover the activities of loons throughout a year, including migration, courtship, nesting, raising a family, and fall congregation.

  • 1/11/24: 25 Years of Loon Conservation: Lucas Savoy, Director of Biodiversity Research Institute’s Loon Program, will discuss his career of studying the impacts of emerging threats, such as environmental contaminants, disease, oils spills, and climate change, to loons. BRI’s research has also provided insight into loon ecology, such as loon migratory pathways.

  • 2/8/23: There and Back Again: A Loon’s Tale: Join Natasha Bartolotta, Stewardship and Outreach Manager for the National Loon Center in MN, for her interesting discussion of threats affecting loons in the Mississippi Flyway.

  • 3/21/23: Loons of Alaska: Tamara Zeller, of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will talk about the genetics of Alaska’s loons and the impact of environmental contaminants to Alaska’s loon populations.

  • 4/11/23: Adirondack Loon Research and Conservation: ACLC’s own Research Biologist, Griffin Archambault, will provide an overview of the ACLC’s long-time research, management, and education programs. Join Griffin in learning how to become involved with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation.
To learn more, and to register for one or more Loon Zooms, visit www.adkloon.org. The cost is $10/presentation or all 6 for $50 (free for ACLC donors). Pre-registration is required to receive an email invitation to the Loon Zoom meetings. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended.
