Wintry Mix
Winter weather doesn’t have to mean months of house arrest. In these hills the only requirements for frigid fun are desire and imagination—and maybe a few well-placed layers.

On January 10 head through the woods for Mohawk Valley Alpiners’ snowshoe bushwhack. The hike begins on the Broomstick Lake trail, in Arietta, and ends at the Nine Corner Lake trailhead, Caroga Lake. Meet at the Caroga Lake Post Office at 9:00 a.m.; call (518) 568-5372 for details.
The Chilly Ski & Snowshoe Festival heats up the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) in Paul Smiths on January 16. The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts (877-752-7715, www.adirondackarts.org), in Blue Mountain Lake, offers a full belly with the full moon at Dine In/Ski Out on January 30. Snowshoe or ski by the light of the moon, beginning at 5:00 p.m., then warm up with a potluck supper of soups and stews.
Every Saturday and Sunday from January 9 to March 28 the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks, in Tupper Lake, presents Winter Wildays, with family-friendly art projects, animal encounters and showshoe hikes, as well as primers on raising chickens, alternative energy and more.
