The Night Stuff
When November arrives the balance between night and day shifts. Adirondack darkness is not to be cursed but savored in programs that capitalize on the deeper shades of the light spectrum. There’s plenty to observe in the skies, woods and even a few towns.
The Adirondack Mountain Club will host Meteor Mania on November 17, at the height of this year’s spectacular Leonid meteor shower. Gather at Adirondak Loj, in Lake Placid, around 10:00 p.m. to view Jupiter through a telescope and stay after midnight to see the shooting stars. Call (518) 523-3441 or visit www.adk.org for details.
Illuminating an impressive Christmas tree in Shepard Park provides a fitting flourish to Lite Up the Village in Lake George on November 28. Strung with thousands of lights, the dazzling Canadian Pacific Holiday Train is slated for stations from Whitehall to Plattsburgh on November 30. Drop off nonperishables for regional food pantries at Ticonderoga, Port Henry and other depots. Visit www.cpr.ca or call (514) 395-7265 for the schedule.
A bonfire and buffet, fireworks and family fun mark the Great Adirondack Snowdance at Melody Lodge, in Speculator (518-548-6562, www.melodylodge.com), starting at 5:00 p.m. on December 5.
It’s a hoot at the Paul Smiths Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center (www.adkvic.org) on December 18 for Owl Prowl.
