HELP FOR AQUAHOLICS
On June 15 the Lake George Land Conservancy (518-644-9673, www.lglc.org) invites canoeists and kayakers for a leisurely guide-led paddle on Northwest Bay Brook. Learn about the flora and fauna that flourish in this protected marsh and break for lunch in the spot where the brook meets Lake George. Participants must register in advance, provide their own boats as well as lunch, and meet at 9:30 a.m. at the state launch site, along Route 9N, north of Bolton Landing.

  Losing command of your canoe? What better way to take control than enrolling in the Adirondack Freestyle Symposium at Houghton Colleges Star Lake campus, from July 16 through 20. Sponsored by the Loon Works, a canoe-building outfit based in South Carolina, the symposium features obedience classes for your canoe, taught by American Canoe Associationcertified instructors from Maine,Texas and Lake Placid.Paddlers of all levels learn technique in morning sessions then spend afternoons on their own perfecting their strokes.Learn more or sign up by calling (864) 296-6051.

  For those seeking kayaking counsel, the Lake Champlain Sea Kayak Institute, at its State University of New YorkPlattsburgh headquarters, runs from July 23 through 29, and offers clinics, demos and lectures, and wraps up with its popular race around Valcour Island.   Meandering Moose River provides the scenery for an August 15 canoe trip guided by naturalist Gary Lee, sponsored by the Arts Center/Old Forge. WILDLIFE 101

  The Adirondack Wildlife Festival, beginning at 10:00 a.m. on August 13, at the Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Center in Paul Smiths (518-327-3000), celebrates all things furry, feathered and fishy. Among the activities: live bird demos, lectures from animal experts, sessions with wildlife photographers, exhibits by outdoor-recreation, sportsmens and wildlife organizations, and lots more.

  Catch up on the bruin-human relationship during Wildlife Conservation Societys Michale Glennon and Zoe Smiths Black Bears and Humans in the Adirondacks: Assessing the Conflict in Communities and Backcountry Areas. SCHOOL OF ROCK
As ever, the Adirondack Mountain Club (518-523-3441, www.adk.org), based in Lake Placid and Lake George, offers a lengthy list of guide-led hikes on regional ranges. There are many to choose from, among them treks to the summits of the Santanonis ( July 13 and September 24); Chimney Mountain ( July 8);Tabletop Mountain (August 5); the Dix Range (August 1113); Hadley Mountain (August 12); Esther and Whiteface Mountains (September 16); and Cliff Mountain and Mount Redfield (September 2224).
