Published since 1970, Adirondack Life has earned numerous national awards for the quality of its photography and design and the depth of its editorial content. The magazine covers New York's six-million-acre Adirondack Park, which offers more wild country than Yellowstone, Yosemite and Glacier National Parks combined.
Within six bimonthly and two special-focus issues, the magazine explores the region's people, places, wildlife, history and public issues, and gives readers insider tips on outdoor recreation, from hiking and canoeing to ice-climbing and backcountry skiing. In late spring, a special issue is devoted entirely to outdoor pursuits; in fall, the "Collectors' Issue" typically features architecture, interior design, gardening and home products reflecting Adirondack style.
Writers such as Bill McKibben, Russell Banks, Joe Connelly, Christine Jerome, Roxanne Robinson, Andrea Barrett and Amy Godine have contributed to the magazine. Their thoughtful essays, historical features and fiction illustrate how people respond to this special place. Nathan Farb, David Muench, Carr Clifton, Nancie Battaglia, Carl Heilman, Mark Bowie, Larry Barns and Ben Stechschulte are just some of the highly regarded photographers who share their work on our pages. In each issue, a mix of images and articles gives great insight into the park, where small towns coexist with wilderness.
This park is a protected landscape with some 3,000 lakes and thousands of miles of rivers and streams. Extensive tracts of old-growth forest will never be logged, destined to remain "forever wild" according to the state constitution. Dozens of mountains tower above 4,000 feet, some with alpine summits where rare arctic plants survive. In recent years, bald eagles, moose and possibly even mountain lions have reclaimed their original habitat.
This Web site presents a sample of articles from current issues, as well as information about writing and photography contests, reader demographics for advertisers and our signature products, from calendars and maps to apparel. Copies of the magazine may be purchased at newsstands and bookstores throughout the Northeast or by calling 800-877-5530. Subscription rates are $24.95 per year. Subscription Form.
Community Outreach
Adirondack Life supports a wide variety of cultural, environmental, historical, health care and community organizations across the region through monetary donations, in-kind contributions and staff volunteer time. The magazine underwrites programming at North Country Public Radio, based in Canton, New York, which operates transmitters from Speculator to Old Forge to Peru. The magazine has given generously to the capital campaign of the Adirondack Medical Center for construction at the Saranac Lake hospital. We strongly believe that our publication shares with readers what's important to the human and natural communities of the Adirondack Park, in print, on the Web and through valuable partnerships.
Adirondack Life subscriptions are a benefit of membership in the Adirondack Museum, in Blue Mountain Lake, and we work with this outstanding institution on many projects. We support a summer concert of the Jay Entertainment and Music Society, as well as performances at Westport's Depot Theatre and the Adirondack Theatre Festival, in Glens Falls. We donate subscriptions and products to Trout Unlimited; The North Country Association for the Visually Impaired, Lake Placid; the Lake George Arts Project; Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, Blue Mountain Lake; Habitat for Humanity regional projects; High Peaks Hospice, Saranac Lake, Port Henry and throughout the park; Dewey Mountain Friends, Saranac Lake; plus numerous libraries, schools, civic organizations and youth groups. We help promote sports events with the Olympic Regional Development Authority and sponsor a jumping class for junior equestrians at the Lake Placid Horse Show.
Magazine staff are dedicated volunteers, working on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to raise thousands of dollars for research every year. Employees have performed in benefits for Step It Up, the Adirondack Nature Conservancy and the North Country Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Others are active in Literacy Volunteers, the Adirondack Center for Writing as well as local fire departments and emergency squads.
We are sponsors of expos that bring fine Adirondack crafts and products to audiences inside and outside the park. These events include the Adirondack Living Shows, in Lake George in August and other venues in New York and New Jersey. The magazine also sponsors the Rustic Furniture Fair, at the Adirondack Museum, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary in September 2007. At the Adirondack Life booths you can meet magazine staff and learn more about our ongoing projects.
Editorial and art staff have been guest speakers at colleges around the region, including St. Lawrence University, Canton; SUNY-Plattsburgh; Paul Smith's College; and Colgate University. Aspiring young writers from many schools have worked as summer interns at our offices in Jay, New York. The best way to learn about publishing is to join the team at a busy magazine or newspaper, and we encourage students to contact the editorial department directly (aledit@adirondacklife.com) for internship information.
