Presenting the winners of ADIRONDACK LIFE's annual photography contest

From the thousands of pictures submitted to our contest, it's clear that amateur photographers are expanding their territories, interests and even hours on the trail. Our grand-prize winner is the stunning night sky above Osgood Pond, a technically difficult shot that Paul Duncan nailed with his digital camera.

More than 240 men and women sent in their work late last fall, showing country from Cranberry Lake to the Hudson Gorge to the High Peaks. It's evident they were searching for the distinctive in nature as well as the human landscape.

Whether the subject was a shimmering watery panorama, an architectural relic, wildlife on the go or an intimate macro-lens scene of a bursting milkweed pod, capturing a moment in light and time was key to our judges' decisions. Photographs were scrutinized over several rounds during a week of discussion, with names deleted, to avoid bias. Several contestants proved their understanding of the craft by winning more than one award.

First- through third-place honorees will receive a commemorative bowl made by potter Sue Young, of Jay. The overall winner earns this trophy plus free admission to the signature fall workshop sponsored by the Adirondack Photography Institute (API), based in Inlet.
